Manley SLAM! Stereo Limiter & Mic Pre
Professional Stereo Limiter & Microphone Preamp with DI, A/D, D/A, VU & PPM
Manley's SLAM stands for Stereo Limiter And MicPre. SLAM offers much more than just Limiter and Mic Pre though - as well as the two Class A Pre Amps and ELOP and FET "brick wall" limiters (making 4 in total) you also get DI, A/D, D/A, VU and PPM. The powerful external power supply keeps any unwanted magnetic fields far away from the precious audio. This powerhouse can take anything you can throw at it and it'll get LOUD, fast!
The Manley SLAM! pairs the electro-optical circuit from the ELOP+ with a fast FET-based brick-wall limiter and compliments the combination with a sidechain. The end result is a sonic output that soars between sparkling clarity and electrifying distortion to the ominous punch of ocean-deep bass. For preamps, the SLAM! offers two tube microphone preamplifiers to offer phase reverse, 48V phantom power and up to 60dB of gain and 20dB more gain in the limiter.
Both of the Manley SLAM!’s channels have tube microphone preamplifiers with switchable phase reverse and phantom power. Additionally, the new tube circuit delivers up to 60dB of gain and there's a further 20dB more available in the limiter too. You’re not going to run out of juice when confronted by a soft voice or low output ribbon microphone. The front panel DI inputs make it possible to supplement XLR microphones with line-level instruments. The input attenuator also sits to the front alongside a variable pad.
Available simultaneously or separately on each channel, the Manley SLAM! enjoys two different and distinct limiters. Both can be deployed to get as much or as little of either as you see fit. First off, a fast FET-based “brick wall” limiter is on board to provide the expected range from super-clean to crunching distortion. A plethora of colours can be distributed across a sound using the release control and a round shape can also be achieved with the clip setting. Additionally, the ELOP+’s electro-optical circuit sits alongside the FET limiter. You only need to know that this reengineered component comes as stock in most professional studios to recognise the added value it brings to the SLAM!.
The SLAM! enables you to monitor raw input levels, the final output levels and ELOP Limiter gain reduction. Quick and precise multicolour LED ladder peak meters display the input and output levels as well as the FET gain reduction. The LED meters do Peak, Peak Hold timed, and Peak Hold until reset. It’s also possible to manually dictate where the bars change colour to pair the SLAM! up with your other gear. Plus, there's a switchable pad on the VUs at 0, -3dB and -6dB to help prevent the needles from hitting the red during mastering.
