URSA Mini 4.6K Used in the Production of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Congratulations to Blackmagic Design, whose brilliant URSA Mini 4.6K digital film camera package was amongst those chosen in the creation of the Academy Award winning director Martin McDonagh’s latest movie masterpiece, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

The film, starring Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson and Peter Dinklage, was beautifully lensed by Ben Davis, and because McDonagh’s work tends to contain a lot of dialogue, is crammed with close up shots designed to give movie goers plenty of all-important context. These crucial establishing shots aren’t always factored into the day’s shooting, especially on films with smaller budgets, so Davis turned up on set early to capture many of the vital general views and beauty shots.

In his opinion while there are plenty of small camera packages available, most of them demand too many awkward extra accessories. And that’s where the URSA Mini made all the difference. He stripped it right back, it didn’t require bulky accessories, it features a convenient built-in monitor, and it’s remarkably easy to use.

Combining the URSA Mini 4.6K with a rented short zoom plus a Blackmagic URSA Viewfinder meant Davis achieved excellent accessibility, a piece of kit that was easy to grab and use on impulse. Davis also genuinely appreciated the fact that Blackmagic Design has prioritised sensor latitude over speed which, as a cinematographer, he feels is far more important. The movie was graded and finished in DaVinci Resolve Studio, and the DI delivered by the talented Goldcrest Post colourist Adam Gasman.
