The Atomos family of monitor/recorders is legendary and at NAB 2018 they announced a new member – the Ninja V.  As the name suggests the Ninja V is a 5-inch addition to the HDMI line up and compliments its big brothers the Ninja Flame and Ninja Inferno.

The Ninja V is a 5-inch, 4Kp60 10bit HDR daylight viewable 1000nit portable monitor/recorder that is perfect for Mirrorless cameras, DSLRs and gaming.  As with the entire Atomos line up the key advantage of using an external monitor/recorder is to bypass the recording limitations that can be an issue on certain cameras.  The Ninja V allows you to record up to 4Kp60 10-bit HDR video direct from your camera’s sensor over HDMI 2.0.

Whereas other monitor/recorders manufacturers rely on SD Card technology as storage media, Atomos employ SSD slots and the Ninja V is no different.  In fact with the 5-inch model they have brought a new SSDmini form factor to the table.  The AtomX SSDmini is smaller than standard SSDs and comes in a little over 1/4-inch tall and 3-inches long.  Its also 20% shorter than traditional SSDs yet keeps the standard SATA III connector, its backwards compatible with previous Atomos drives with the addition of an extension handle.  Expect Angelbird, G-Technology and Sony to bring out custom versions for the Ninja V.

As you’d expect, the Ninja V screen displays 10+ stops of dynamic range in realtime from Log/PQ/HLG signals.  The near edge-to-edge screen allows you to clearly see your images in daylight and also features anti-reflection.  The display can also be calibrated for perfect colour accuracy every time with playout to HDR or SDR TVs.  Line/Mic in, Headphone out, built-in speakers and NP-F style battery slots complete the physical features.

The intuiative AtomOS software tools and features include histogram and peaking for Focus, WFM/RGB parade/vector for Exposure, guides and safe area for Framing as well as HDR log selection, shuttle controls and slow motion and frame-by-frame playback.

The Atmos Ninja V is expected to arrive in the UK in July – for more info and to pre-order please visit the website by clicking here
