The 2nd Generation range of Scarlett's now have a sleeker chassis comprised of red metal and the new metal gain controls add to the improved feel of these built to go-anywhere audio interfaces. Focusrite have added a more even gain structure allowing levels to be set more accurately and the instrument input has been completely redesigned so it can now handle hot pick-ups from electric guitars. An updated version of Focusrite Control software allows you to fully manage the routing of your I/O in the 6i6 model and above and subtle changes to the analogue protection circuitry are in place to stop power surges. Even the headphones and microphone found in the Studio Packs have had a redesign aligning them with the redesign of the Scarlett range themselves.

Focusrite's second generation Scarlett Solo is the ideal starting point into audio recording – record guitars and vocals simultaneously on separate inputs allowing them to be mixed independently. The 2i2 is a truly portable unit powered off the USB bus meaning no power supply, features two combination inputs with great sounding Scarlett mic preamps, line level inputs, instrument inputs and 1/4 inch balanced jacks outputs to connect to professional studio monitors. The 2i4 has the same inputs but gives you the flexibility of four analogue outputs, great for anyone needing a cue mix for recording or performing and also has MIDI I/O. The 6i6 is great for small bands or anyone wanting to record multiple instruments at the same time as it has an additional two line inputs, digital I/O, four analogue inputs and two headphone outputs allow separate settings. The 18i8 starts to really ramp up the options with four extra line inputs, digital I/O, two main monitor outputs and separate headphone monitoring as well as an ADAT input which allows you to expand even further by adding an additional eight mic preamps. The 18i20 is a stunning centrepiece to any recording studio; the rack-mountable unit has 18 inputs and 20 outputs allowing you to record anything from drums to keys and vocals.

All in all this is an impressive update to what was a very popular range of interfaces and with the addition of Pro Tools | First and the Creative Pack, Focusrite have made the Scarlett range hard to beat. The Scarlett Solo 2i2, 2i4 and Solo &amp 2i2 Studio Packs are available straight away and the 6i6, 18i8 and 18i20 will be shipping later on this month.
